FreeOTFE is a free and open-source encryption program designed for on-the-fly encryption.
The program allows you to create a virtual encrypted logical drive, on which data is automatically encrypted before being written to. FreeOTFE was originally released by Sarah Dean in 2004, and was the first open source encryption system to provide a modular architecture allowing third parties to implement additional algorithms if needed. This software is compatible with Linux encrypted volumes (e.g. LUKS, cryptoloop, dm-crypt), allowing free reading and writing of Linux encrypted data. Version 4.0 introduces additional two-factor authentication with smart card and/or hardware security modules (HSMs) using PKCS#11 (Cryptoki) standard developed by RSA labs.
