mpg123 is a fast, free minimalist console MPEG audio player.
mpg123 appeared after the first mp3 player for UNIX systems, MAPlay, and quickly became widespread. Its powerful assembler optimization of the iDCT stage of MPEG decoding makes it faster than other mp3 players. Due to the optimization, it uses system resources very efficiently. The XMMS player uses the mpg123 engine.
