Simple DirectMedia Layer is a free, cross-platform multimedia library that implements a single software interface to the graphics subsystem, audio devices, and inputs for a wide range of platforms.
SDL itself is fairly simple. It can be seen as a thin layer providing support for 2D pixel operations, sound, file access, event handling, etc. The library consists of several subsystems, such as Video, Audio, CD-ROM, Joystick and Timer.
