VKontakte will launch voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption

28 April 2018
As many people have probably noticed, on the night of April 27, 2018, the social network VKontakte was temporarily blocked in Russia. This happened due to the fact that the IP addresses belonging to the social network were included in the list of banned in our country. Now access to VKontakte has been restored, but the development team said that they intend to take a retaliatory step.Managing Director of VKontakte - Andrei Rogozov, said that access to many resources is blocked because of a lack of understanding of the principles of the modern Internet. According to him, the end-to-end encryption technology is one of the main tools to ensure the protection of data in the network. At the same time, the transfer of any keys for getting access to correspondence is not possible, because the encryption takes place on the user's end device. In such a way, many popular services for messaging from around the world work, and soon their list will be added to VKontakte with the new function of voice and video calls with end-to-end encryption. It should be added that in the night of April 27 not only the social network VKontakte was affected. The list of banned sites in Russia was about two hundred IP-addresses belonging to Yandex, Odnoklassniki, LiveInternet, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo. Already in the morning, representatives of Roskomnadzor commented on the situation and stated that those addresses had not been sent to telecom operators for access restrictions. Moreover, all of them are already free from blocking, and their short-term presence in the register is connected with technological features of the system. Nevertheless, due to the unstable operation after blocking, VKontakte team had to turn off the integration of ReCaptcha service, which is used to fight with spam. Also, they had to drop support for AMP technology, which allowed opening external links in mobile applications.
