Theora Free Video Codec. The goal of this project is to integrate the On2 VP3 video codec, the Vorbis audio codec, and the Ogg multimedia container into a single multimedia solution, similar to MPEG-4. It is analogous to MPEG-4 codecs (such as Xvid, DivX, and H.264), RealVideo, Windows Media Video, and others.
Theora is a lossy video compression format based on the On2 VP3 codec. Video compressed in this format can be stored in any suitable media container. As of 2007, the most commonly used container for this purpose is the Ogg container, combined with Ogg Vorbis audio.
In contrast to the non-commercially available common counterparts (MPEG-4, MP3), the combination of the Ogg container, video in Theora, and sound in Ogg Vorbis is a fully open, license-free multimedia format.
