Speed of sound in air 3D virtual laboratory work on physics (section: Mechanics).
INTENTION: Simulation of the laboratory work on general physics.
PURPOSE OF THE EXPERIENCE: Measurement of the propagation time of sound impulses in a Kundt tube.
DESCRIPTION: Sound waves in gases are longitudinal. In this case, the group velocity is equal to the phase velocity. In this experiment, we will measure the propagation time of a sound pulse between two acoustic probes in a Kundt tube and use the result to calculate the speed of sound. The dependence of sound velocity on temperature is investigated in the range from room temperature to 50°C. The measurement result agrees with the result obtained by Laplace.
