Torsion of rods 3D virtual laboratory work on physics (section: Mechanics).
Purpose: Simulation of a laboratory work on general physics.
PURPOSE OF THE EXPERIENCE: Determination of the torsion coefficient and shear modulus.
DESCRIPTION: In order to deform a solid, an external force must be applied. It acts by overcoming the body's own resistance to deformation, which depends on the material of which the body is made, as well as its geometry and the direction of the applied force. The deformation is elastic, reversible and proportional to the applied force as long as the force is not too great. One commonly studied example is the torsional force applied to a flat cylindrical rod that is fixed at one end. The resistance of the rod to deformation can be numerically analyzed and determined on a machine which allows the rod itself and the disc of the pendulum to be initiated and then the period of these oscillations to be measured.
